About Nizhoni Smiles
OUR MISSION is to improve the health, well-being, and self-confidence of Native children and adults through oral health education and treatment.
Making Beautiful Smiles Since 1977
Nizhoni Smiles began treating orthodontic patients in 1977 as a program of the Indian Health Service (IHS). When IHS later discontinued orthodontic services, Nizhoni Smiles incorporated as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to continue providing this important care.
Today, the organization has grown beyond its orthodontic roots to provide family dental and orthodontic care for children and adults from its clinic in Shiprock, New Mexico.
As a nonprofit organization, the focus remains on serving patients and communities rather than generating profit. Nearly 50 years after the work began, that mission continues to guide the organization: helping people achieve better oral health, greater confidence, and beautiful smiles through professional, accessible care.
More Than Dental Care
The impact of Nizhoni Smiles extends beyond the treatment provided in the dental chair. Oral health education helps patients and families develop healthy habits and better understand the importance of caring for their teeth and gums.
The organization also contributes to the community by providing local employment opportunities and offering training and mentorship for people interested in dentistry and other health professions.
Together, these efforts reflect a broader commitment to strengthening oral health, creating opportunities, and supporting the well-being of the communities Nizhoni Smiles serves.
